ABC axes Stateline (again), as Marks paves the way for more cuts

The ABC's secretive axing of Stateline, could signal that ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks wants shorter news stories

ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks has quietly dumped ABC News’ state-focused coverage, with no public announcement, ending a project to improve state-level reporting only a couple of years into its existence launched by former news director, Justin Stevens.

ABC Stateline, the umbrella under which the ABC’s coverage of state politics and news was published, appears to have disappeared from broadcasts and the ABC website. It’s been over a month since any content using the branding was published online, with the last story being an investigation into reoffending in the Tasmanian criminal justice system.

A monthly national TV edition of Stateline, which wrapped together the best coverage from state bureaus, hosted by Greg Jennett, also appears to have disappeared from TV schedules, with the last episode available on iView dating back to July.

However, before Lamestream and The Age’s Calum Jaspan contacted the ABC with questions, no announcement of Stateline’s axing had been made publicly or to staff across the ABC’s News division.
