EXCLUSIVE: ABC delays axing Indigenous TV department, after Lamestream report

The move comes following an outcry within the ABC, and among the entertainment industry more generally.

On Friday afternoon, staff at the ABC received an email telling them that proposed changes to Indigenous teams across the ABC would be delayed for further consultation until September 3.

The move follows frustration and outcry from ABC staff and sections of the screen industry over the removal of a key Indigenous TV role as well as the axing of the ABC's 40-year-old dedicated Indigenous TV department.

The ABC's Director of First Nations Strategy Kelly Williams said that "having heard from many of you", the deadline for consultation was to be extended. The original deadline was August 27.

Under the proposed plan, Williams is set to head a new division, bringing together all Indigenous teams outside the News division, with the title 'Director, First Nations Content & Strategy'.
